Message from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Monika Ivantysynova (Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg) Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Fluid Power:
The eighth issue of the International Journal of Fluid Power (http://journal.fluid.power.net) is now available. This is the third publication year of the International Journal of Fluid Power. I would like to express my grateful thanks to you all for your support of our Journal and the good co-operation during the last year. Especially, I would like to thank all our reviewers and the associate editors for their great help.
Last year our colleague and good friend Professor Andrzej Garbacik died suddenly. The first issue in 2002 was dedicated to him.
The International Journal of Fluid Power was strengthened by two new members. We welcome Professor Andrzej Balawender from Technical University of Gdansk in Poland as a new member of the Editorial Board and Professor Noah Manring from University of Missouri in USA as a new Associate Editor.
In connection with his retirement Professor Atsushi Yamaguchi from Yokohama National University in Japan had asked to finish his membership in the Editorial Board. He proposed Professor Kazushi Sanada from Yokohama National University as his successor. I would like to thank Professor Yamaguchi for all his effort and great support for the Journal and I wish him on behalf of the International Journal of Fluid Power all the best for the future.
During the last year 25 papers were submitted to the International Journal of Fluid Power. This gives a number of 83 papers totally, which were submitted from authors from 26 different countries world wide. All papers are peer reviewed by at least two reviewers. At the moment we have 7 papers in the review process for the next issues. Until now 40 papers have successfully passed the review process, which is a rate of approx. 48%.
A weak point of our Journal is the insufficient number of subscribers and therefore we ask you to promote Journal subscription to libraries, companies and individuals. The annual subscription rate set at 98€ (98US$) is very low in comparison to other journals. Please also remember to reference Journal papers in your publications.
Monika Ivantysynova
Editor
The contents and article abstracts of the eighth issue is available for download here as a PDF document (175KB).

Hydrostatic Pumps and Motors: Principles, Design, Performance, Modelling, Analysis, Control and Testing
Akademia Books International
ISBN 1-85522-16-2
First English Edition 2000
514 pages
Hydrostatic drive systems are used in almost every field of modern drive technology. The merits of transmitting energy by fluids are: accuracy, controllability and the transmission of large forces and torques due to the very high power density. New applications are possible by the integration of electronics and microelectronics into hydrostatic components and systems.
The book encompasses comprehensively the design and analysis of hydrostatic pumps and motors. It is useful for students of mechanical engineering, engineers and designers, technicians and all others who desire to inform themselves especially about hydrostatic machines. It provides the understanding of operation of hydrostatic pumps and motors and thereby the know-how of design and development of displacement machines in accordance with state of art analysis and desgin methods.
After a brief introduction, a definition and a historic review of hydrostatics follows a chapter dealing with the fundamentals of displacement machines. Especially the basic properties of pressure fluids and the scope of laminar gap flow are discussed. Chapter 3 describes the basic structure and basic principle of displacement machines, i.e. both pumps and motors. The focus of this book lies in Chapters 4 and 5, where the detailed computational algorithms and the design methods for all displacement machine types known today are discussed. Chapter 6 deals briefly with the control of displacement machines. Chapter 7 presents basic test procedures for pumps and motors.

The main reasons for the renaming are as follows:
- In recent years, our research field, oil-hydraulics and pneumatics, has been expanding and evolving into new areas. The representative areas are water hydraulic systems, which are driven by tap water or seawater, and several advanced systems driven by functional fluids such as magneto-rheological fluid and electro-rheological fluid.
- JFPS hopes to contribute to solving the biggest problem in the 21st. century, environmental protection. Through research activities in new fields JFPS will be able to contribute to urgent technologies such as new energies, resources under the sea, saving energy and recycling.
- In accordance with the renaming, JFPS wishes to increase its activity by developing new systems driven by fluid power, and, as a result, to contribute to the development of engineering and technologies in the 21st. century.
