Total Contamination Control
ISBN 0-646-35306-3, Fluid Power Net Publications, Melbourne, Australia, 1998.

Keywords: contamination, wear debris, filter, condition monitoring, modelling, simulation, monitoring

Abstract: Presence of contamination in hydraulic control systems is probably the most important factor affecting their operation and reliability. Recognition of the importance of contamination to hydraulic technology provided impetus for concentrated effort by research institutions and industry to develop techniques and approaches to design of contamination control which would lead to increased reliability of hydraulic systems. This research led to the development of a system approach to contamination control and to design philosophy encapsulated in so called the Total Contamination Control. In this approach contamination problems are addressed at the design stage of hydraulic systems by determining required cleanliness levels in the system and establishing a monitoring program to ensure that the target cleanliness levels are maintained. This book is concerned with various aspects of contamination control which should be considered when developing new or refitting existing hydraulic systems. Introductory chapters deal with types of wear and contaminant particles which could be present in a system, fluid characteristics, filter types and contamination assessment procedures. In the later chapters setting of target cleanliness levels, design of contamination systems, filter selection and modelling and simulation techniques applicable to contamination control systems are discussed and are followed by chapters expressing views on condition monitoring, and contamination control from the end users and original equipment manufacturer point of view.

Abstract: This book, second in the series, deals with application of Total Contamination Control in hydraulic and lubricated systems.  There are twenty two chapters covering contamination control and engineering practice; monitoring techniques; managing the monitoring mix; condition based monitoring and contamination control; modern fluids and the effect of contamination; water contamination; cleanliness control; rolling element bearings; rotating machinery reliability; cost benefit analysis; plant care and value of the human asset; journal bearing wear; specialised fluids; lubricated systems-design considerations, some new concepts from the Wear Particle Atlas and three case studies.
